Comments, Southern New England Stumpage Report 4th quarter, 2005

  • postponed sales due to perception of soft market for red oak
  • red oak down
  • other oaks should be broken out as black oak and scarlet oak. There is a significant price difference
  • how can a consultant give prices on mixed woodlots unless of course they receive unit prices?
  • $325/Mbf for beech!!! I think that is a misprint
  • Oak market is still soft
  • Veneer market steady
  • Firewood market strong
  • Shortage of loggers;  buyers reporting large backlog of work due to weather
  • Oak and ash still down; sugar maple, cherry,  white pine holding; firewood obviously moving, re a 22.5% increase in electric heating cost
  • Ground conditions quite variable! 3 of my 4 pending cuts will have to be done in summer 06 instead, re no desire to mess up existing ground.
